In this digital age, Online therapy is just as beneficial - if not more so - than conventional therapy.
According to a study from the University of Zurich (2013), therapy sessions carried out online have become increasingly common in recent years.
In this busy world we live in, we are not always able to take time off work to visit therapists, doctors or health professionals easily. Online counselling is a convenient, effective way of engaging in therapy at a time and place convenient to your needs. A Tranquil Heart understands and appreciates the importance of meeting our clients where they are at.
The only real difference from face-to-face counselling is that the therapist and client are not in the same room during their work together.
Normally we offer counselling on a weekly basis. This is to allow clients time in between sessions to integrate their experiences of the session. The pace of counselling is important and it is important not to rush the process.
A counselling session normally lasts for one hour. In certain circumstances, the duration can be extended.
The length of time varies from person to person. It can vary from a few weeks up to a few months or longer. Most people feel better even after a few sessions. It is the choice of the client to choose to continue with the counselling process. It can be beneficial for periodic reviews or check-ins to mark progress and/or look at future focus of therapy. Ending therapy is discussed and planned in advance.
People can question their own wellbeing if they find it difficult to cope with life after a traumatic event. They can experience nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive memories and thoughts along with a high level of fear and distress. These feelings are normal reactions to the abnormal events that have occurred. Counselling helps people become aware of this and learn skills to work through these feelings by becoming more resourced.
People can and do recover from traumatic events and experiences. It is like having a broken bone. If it heals properly, then it can be stronger in the spot where it was fractured before the injury. Traumatic experiences can be regarded as broken bones of the soul. When you engage in the process of recovery, you will get stronger.
Counselling is confidential. This issue is discussed in detail with each client during the first therapy session. The client is treated with dignity and respect at all times during the counselling sessions.
Counselling helps by providing a person with time and space (which is often taken up with the busyness of life, family, work etc) to focus on what is causing them concern. It can be of enormous relief for someone to be able to talk and to be listened to. Often it may be the first time that they have been able to express their feelings in relation to a particular issue. This in itself can lead to healing. It can be a way of gaining insights, releasing past wounds and gaining acceptance of what is.
We cannot change our past but we can change how we respond to it. Through counselling, we can resolve the unfinished business of the past and live more in the now.
Counselling is a one-to-one relationship. Its purpose is to enable a person to talk about the issue/s that are causing them difficulties in their life. The counsellor’s role is to provide a safe and confidential space to explore this and help the person gain insight into what they need to move past the block and experience healing.
We all experience difficulties and challenges in our lives at some time or other. Some experiences may be too difficult to deal with on your own. It is not always easy or possible, to talk with family or friends and they may not be able to give you the help you need. Counsellors are professionally trained to provide support and assistance to their clients in a confidential and non-judgemental way thus helping clients move towards a more peaceful life.
